Overview:
When most people imagine getting a massage, Swedish massage is what comes to mind. This style was developed in 1812 by Per Henrik Ling, a Swedish physician, which is where the name comes from. Swedish massage uses a combination of different massage strokes to soothe away tension and relax aching muscles. A Swedish massage is performed on a massage table, with clothes off. After warming oil up in his or hands, the therapist applies it with long, gliding strokes called effleurage. Usually, the next step in the massage is the kneading strokes that are called petrissage. Other strokes that are used include friction, tapping, vibration, and sometimes stretching.
Benefits:
Swedish massage is useful for relaxing muscles and stimulating the lymphatic system, helping to move toxins out of the body. Also, it stimulates circulation and helps increase blood flow to muscles. This allows minor injuries to heal faster. Massage stimulates the production of endorphins, a chemical in your brain which helps block pain. It is most commonly used simply to increase general health and well-being.
How it works:
Using oil and long, flowing strokes, Swedish massage uses light pressure and occasional friction and deep strokes to increase circulation, which increases oxygenation in the tissues and removes toxins. The application of touch across the body also seems to release chemicals in the brain (endorphins) that can be linked to pleasure, relaxation, and well being.
Specialized equipment:
Depending on the setting, Swedish massage therapists may have different types of tables and lotions. Tables may be padded, heated, and/or portable (for the mobile massage). Premium lotions or oils may also be used, often with an element of aromatherapy.

Preparing for your visit:
Swedish massage is performed with oil or lotions, so you will be unclothed and draped for the massage. Remember to wear loose clothes that are easy to get in and get out of, and that won’t be ruined by excess oil left over on your skin. Also, it’s best not to eat a large meal or drink caffeine directly before your massage
