Overview of LomiLomi massage:
LomiLomi is an ancient Hawaiian healing art. The massage emphasizes the use of large amounts of oil and long strokes, with some elements of energy work. Although massage is used as the primary healing practice, LomiLomi encompasses much more than a simple rubdown. Formerly practiced by traditional healers called kahunas, it was officially banned along with most of traditional Hawaiian culture in 1836. In LomiLomi, the practitioner not only massages the client using specific traditional techniques, he or she also transmits healing energy to the client through the power of touch. For this reason, LomiLomi is often referred to as “spiritual massage.”
Benefits of LomiLomi massage:
LomiLomi helps energy move more freely through the body. Also, it improves circulation, relieves pain, and helps eliminate waste products from your lymphatic system. LomiLomi can help relieve arthritis pain, depression, insomnia, anxiety, and various other concerns. In addition, it is a completely soothing and comforting experience because the massage therapist is focused on passing loving energy to you through his or her touch.
How LomiLomi massage works:
LomiLomi usually begins with a brief, meditative prayer. You may also be asked to state your “healing goals” for the massage session. Lomi Lomi is a very fluid massage. Its trademark strokes include long, soothing strokes given with the entire forearm; moving thumbs and knuckles in circles across the skin to help break up waste deposits; and lightly stretching the body and rotating the joints. Another feature specific to LomiLomi is that the practitioner will often massage 2 areas of the body, a hip and a shoulder for example, at the same time. Also, the practitioner will focus on making healing energy available to give to the client.
